Junior golf is an important part  of every golf club. At Belmont we think its one of the most important.

Belmont Golf Club and the Junior Committee welcome you to the Junior Golf Program. We are committed to promoting junior golf. The purpose of this information is to show you what is available through the Club, both during and after the 8-week beginners program.

If you would like to become a junior member please give the Pro Shop or club a call to discuss.

Club Program - Children 6 tp 9 yrs

This is a once a month program that is run for children between the age of 6-9 years old. This program is designed to be fun and to introduce them to the basic fundamentals of golf

Cadet Program  - Children 9 yrs plus

This program is for children who are 9 years or older. A program is run on Saturday and Sunday mornings to give junior beginners instruction in the fundamentals of golf. The basics, as listed below, are covered in the first part of the program. These skills are developed on the practice fairway. Clubs are available for loan if required.

  • The Course

We move on to improving the swing, use of different clubs, instruction in golf etiquette, dress and behaviour on the course. Cadets start playing 3 or 5-holes under the supervision (not instruction) of a parent. This will help the cadet to become familiar with all the components of a hole (tees, fairways, rough, bunkers and greens). We try to develop a sense of achievement in the Cadets while they adapt to playing with others. Cadets will be progressively selected to play in the Sunday morning Cadets Competition.

Cadet Competition

A 9-hole competition is open to Juniors who have successfully completed the 8 week program. They have the opportunity to play without constant supervision. The first week of the competition is used to determine the Cadet's handicap. They usually can’t wait to compete against other cadets. A small fee ($5.00) is charged each week to cover green fees, the competition and lesson. Competition starts at 6.30am and finishes with a presentation about 10.30am. Cadets then have a half-hour lesson to improve their golf skills. The competition runs each Sunday throughout the year except for Christmas school holidays. The competition is designed to teach Cadets how to score different types of golf games and to improve etiquette, both on and off the course. We aim to help Cadets enjoy their golf while teaching sportsmanship and continuing to improve golf skills. By this time the Cadet will usually decide if they want to stay with golf as their sport. They often hint to Mum or Dad for birthday presents to use on the course. The Club’s professionals are the best people to advise you on what is appropriate. They keep a close watch on cadets during play and lessons and knows their level of ability.

Joining the Club - 12 yrs plus

Cadets are eligible to join the club at age 12. They can still play in the Cadets Competition or move on to the Members/Associates Competition. This is an 18-hole competition, which they can try when they feel confident and have a good understanding of the rules and etiquette. Cadet's Competition provides a good grounding for young people to become respected members of the Club. Cadets are welcome at the Sunday Cadets competition until they decide to join the club.

The Junior Committee

Members under the age of 18 are classified as ‘Juniors’ who come under the jurisdiction of the Junior Committee. This is made up of 20 members who are dedicated to promoting Junior golf at our club. Additional tuition is available to Juniors through the Club Professionals. Most Juniors hope to be chosen to represent the club in the Junior Pennant District Competition. The Committee runs fund raising activities and encourages sponsorship. It also assists talented juniors with special training camps, which are conducted by the Jack Newton Golf Foundation. The Committee sponsors juniors in various events.

The Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation

The Foundation is dedicated to introducing more young people to golf. Greater enjoyment of the game is promoted through developing golf skills and sportsmanship. The Foundation produces a newsletter called “Back Spin” every 3 months. This gives dates for and results of Junior tournaments, news of how prominent Juniors are performing and golfing hints for the aspiring Tiger Woods. If you are interested in joining the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation see our Professional, the Sunday competition organiser or any of the Junior Committee members.
